I finally read all of the Harry Potter books. I have put off starting them for years because I hate waiting for a new book to come out. And then with having a baby and moving twice I still couldn't find the time to start them. So finally I did it. I read them all in about 3 months, and let me tell you I have had some pretty WEIRD dreams! I enjoyed them much more than I ever thought I would. The only thing I have to say is:
I HAVE GOT TO GET MYSELF A MAGIC WAND!!!!!!

Book Review and A Thank You...
This last month for book club we read The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. This was a fantastic book!! It is about a princess who can talk to birds and a horse. She is ridiculed by her family her whole life because she is different than her other siblings. She is supposed to be the next queen, but her mother sends her off to a neighboring kingdom to marry their prince. On the way she is betrayed by her own people. She escapes and tries to fight her way back to her thrown and her position. It was such a great book. I would suggest in to everyone! It is the first book in a trilogy, but apparently (from what I have heard, because I haven't read the other two yet) the other two books are about other people in the first book, so I don't think you have to read all of them.
Also, I would like to extend a big Thank You to Lambie-Pie. A few months ago I asked for book ideas for book club this month. I had so many of you tell me some great books. I finally decided on I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith, which Lambie-Pie recommended. I was really surprised I had never heard of this book before because it is by the same author that wrote 101 Dalmations. The book is fantastic. In preparing to host book club this month I read the book twice, and even the second time I read it I couldn't put it down. I kept thinking, "This is silly, you know how the book ends, just put the book down and do your laundry!", but I still couldn't put it down. The book is about the Mortmain family who live in an old run down castle. The book is actually what Cassandra Mortmain is writing in her journal. The father is a writer, but has not written a book since his first one. The family is destitute with no money, and are looking for ways to earn some money. The owner of the castle has recently died, and the new heir arrives to take over his property. What ensues is a little like Pride and Prejudice with the poor girl trying to capture the wealthy neighbor. It is a great book, with super fun insight and humor. It was a great read!!
Happy Reading Everyone!

Book Review: Snow Flower and The Secret Fan
Our book club book for the month was Snow Flower and The Secret Fan by Lisa See. I LOVED this book! The story is set in China and is the story of two friends who are sworn to be friends for life. They are sworn to each other at the age of 6 or 7. And the story tells about the events of their lives....foot binding (VERY interesting!), getting married, having families, etc. What I loved most about the book was the depictions of the customs and traditions of the Chinese people. It was so interesting to read just for that alone, but the story is wonderful to. The story is about deep friendship, betrayal, and forgiveness. It is a wonderful read....I would highly recommend it to anyone.

In Search...
We just picked a new schedule for our book club for next year. I had a book planned that I was going to do because it was the 100th year since its publication...well I found out right before book club that the anniversary is actually in 2008, so I will have to wait another year to choose that book. I am supposed to do book club at my house in February, and I thought it would be fun to do a classic romance...something along the lines of Pride and Prejudice, but I have no ideas. So I am asking for help. Do you know of any good "classic" romances?

Book Review: An Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life
Our Book Club book for the month was An Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. This wasn't my favorite book, but it was definately interesting. The book compiles random thoughts and stories from the author's life into encyclopedia form. It totally reminded me of blogging. Blogs just don't happen to be in alphabetical order. She is a humorous writer, and some of her entries were very amusing. Some of my favorites were Busy, Humbling, Nothing, and Distraction. I think it would be fun to write a book in this style...starting at the letter A and writing about anything that catches my fancy all the way through Z. So if you are interested in a lightly humorous random book that reminds you of blogging this would be the book for you.

A Proud Mother, and a Book Review....
I took my 5-year old in yesterday for her Kindergarten Conference. I tell you, no mother has ever been prouder! (I know, I know, I am sure you all felt this way too!) I taught my daughter pre-school, so this was an extra big thing for me. Especially to hear her teacher gush about how well she did and how smart she is. I have wondered and worried the whole time I was teaching her if I was doing everything the right way, or if she was really learning what she needed to know. So it was so great for me to finally know that I had done a good job of teaching my daughter. She is so excited for Kindergarten. He sent her home with some homework, and she was so excited to do it as soon as we got home. She is going to love Kindergarten. Stay tuned for pics next week of her first day...oh, getting weepy already.
On another note. My book reviews have kind of fizzled lately. It was too much for me to review so many books each week, so I am just going to review our book club book for the month, and any other books I find that I exceptionally love. Our book for this month was The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare. It is a children's literature book and winner of the 1962 Newbery Medal. This was a fantastic book. It is set in Jerusalem at the time of Christ during Roman rule. The main character in the book is an 18 year old boy named Daniel. His father was killed by the Romans, and he has taken a personal oath against the Romans and is waiting for the "deliverer" to come that will bring war against the Romans and free the Jews from their bondage. His hatred of the Romans, leads him to join with a group of men fighting for this purpose. As the story progresses, he is confronted with difficult choices to make regarding his family, friends, and his beliefs. He also is able to listen to Christ's sermons, and starts to have a change of heart regarding his approach to freeing the Jews from bondage. It is an inspiring book, and really makes you think about the things going on in the land during the time of Christ. Not being Jewish, I never really realized the many laws that govern their religion and society. It was very interesting to read about it in this book. It also raises some good guestions. Will I know Him when he comes again? So many people didn't know Him when He walked the earth, performed miracles, and talked directly to the people. So, how will I know it is really Him? It is a wonderful book that makes you think about your beliefs and your faith. Read it with tissues.

PANIC!!!
I am a member of a book club. I absolutely love it!! I love getting together with the other 11 members and socializing and talking about the book we have read that month. Everyone hosts their own month and picks a book for that month. It is fun to get to read different books than the ones I usually pick for myself. It is really a highlight of my month. We hold book club on the fourth Thursday of every month. This month it was at my house. Now, I am kind of a perfectionist, and have been planning the "book club" experience for months. I picked out the book: Into the Blue: A Father's Flight and a Daughter's Return by Susan Edsall. It is a great book about a father, an avid pilot, who has a stroke, and his daughters that undertake his rehabilitation so that he can fly again. I picked the book several months ago after reading several books to find one that I thought would be good. They only had two books in our library system, so I bought 4 more so we would have enough books to share. I have been "preparing" my house for the event. Adding new decorative items, washing curtains, etc. And my current project, painting my living room. I have been planning the perfect dessert...cookie bowls with homemade vanilla icecream, topped with fresh raspberries from my garden, with chocolate curlies served in my new china bowls. I was planning to do extensive dusting and clean my carpets (which were splattered with orange Tang from our last house guests). Everything was going to be perfect! I was going to get my living room painted by then and get to show it off for the first time. I was going to be absolutely prepared when book club came next week.....
Yesterday, I had just returned home from the library when I received a phone call at 5:38p.m. "Are you all ready for book club?" my friend Nicole asked. I responded, "No, it is next week.". "Well, isn't it the fourth Thursday of the month?" Nicole asked. That's when I glanced at my calendar. And looky there, sure enough it was the fourth Thursday! Now, in my defense (so that you won't think that I am stupid and cannot count), when I went through my calendar at the first of the year and wrote down the book club dates, I hadn't noticed that the 1st,2nd, and 3rd had not been PRINTED on my calendar. Well, that one week can make a huge difference!! So I flipped into PANIC mode, and assessed the situation. I had 1 hour and 20 minutes before my fellow book club members arrived at my door. My brother-in-law and his family had been at our house the day before for our zoo trip, and I had spent the whole morning shopping with my sister-in-law, consequently, the house was a disaster. I had a living room that was half painted, library books all over my family room, the baby had removed all the children's movies from the cabinet, and then removed all the movies from their sleeves, several weeks of dust lay over everything (I have been working on my living room, and totally disregarding any other non-essential household chores), a totally filthy kitchen floor covered in sand, a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, stuff covering my kitchen counters, no curtains on my windows (they had been washed and were awaiting ironing). And to make matters worse, my husband was teaching a class that night and would not be home for 3 hours....so I had no babysitter for my kids. And I had absolutely nothing to make for dessert. I called my good friend across the street, and asked her if she was coming to book club. She said yes and that she was excited to come. I told her that I had thought it was next week and, being the great friend she is, instantly flipped into PANIC mode with me. She called her husband and asked him when he would be home and if he would be willing to watch my girls. This man is a saint! He watched my 3 girls, and their 4 girls (9,8,5,4,3,2, and 1 years old) that night until my husband got home and could get my girls. My friend also showed up at my door with two frozen Marie Callendar's pies from her freezer to serve for dessert, and then she whisked my kids away so I could get busy cleaning. She was a life saver!!! For the next hour I ran like a maniac trying to get my house cleaned up. I washed the kitchen floor, sprayed down the curtains with water and tossed them in the dryer, cleaned up the cold cereal I had thrown at my children to eat for dinner, ironed a tablecloth, emptied the dishwasher and threw the dirty dishes in it (in no particular order), wiped down my counters...after throwing everything that was on them into my laundry basket and hiding it in my laundry room, ran a dust rag around the really noticeable spots, russelled up some leftover birthday party plates to serve dessert on, cleaned my bathroom, and managed to take a quick (very cold) shower because after running around like crazy I was stinky! I never washed my hair that day (I figured I didn't need to look fabulous to go shopping with my sister-in-law), but I didn't have enough time to wash it. I actually managed to get most of the important stuff done before everyone arrived. We had a great time visiting and discussing the book, and laughing at me for forgetting book club(it is especially bad that I forgot because I am the president of the book club!). It turned out to be a good evening despite it's wild beginning.

Book Review #4
Here is another book review. There are not too many this time because I reviewed some of my current books with my last review.
The Buffalo Soldiers by Chris Bohjalian: I would not recommend this book. I could not even force myself to finish reading it. This was our Book Club book for the month and no one in our group really liked the book. One of the other ladies highly recommended Midwives which is by the same author.
Better Homes & Gardens New Garden Book: A great resource book for the new gardener. There is lots of different information about different kinds of plants, and great pictures. I was looking for landscaping ideas, and it didn't have a lot of those, but it was an excellent book.
Family Fun Parties: I loved this book. It is definately one for your own personal library. I thought it was just going to be birthday party ideas, but they had holiday and other party ideas. They had lots of themed party ideas...including cake, decorations, invitations, and party favors. This is definately one I am going to buy.
Well that is all for another week...happy reading!

Book Review #3:
Here is my next book review. I am reviewing some of the latest books in my book bag with this post too.
1001 Ideas for Color & Paint: Very colorful book. Lots of painting ideas through pictures (is it child-like to still love picture books?) They have techniques for faux (don't you just love that word) finishing in the book as well.
Secrets of the Spas by Cathrine Bardey: Lots of ideas and recipes for having your own private "at Home" spa experience. They have recipes for light food, and recipes for different beauty "potions", such as scrubs, facial masks, etc. Would be a great book to reference if you are into doing the spa thing at home...I love to do this. It is so relaxing, and cheap!
Making Memory Boxes by Anna Corba: Some beautiful boxes, but too victorian for my taste. I love the victorian look, but it just isn't quite my style.
Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion Magazine: I love this magazine! I thought I wouldn't because I don't care much for those cherries and things she has, but the magazine has cute ideas.
Decorating with Architectural Trimwork by Jay Silber: If you are looking to add a little elegence to your house this is the book! Shows you how to add cornices, door casings, chair rails, wall frames and baseboard moldings to your home. There are tons of pictures so you can get lots of ideas of how to do the different types of molding in just about any room. We are planning to do cornice and wall frames in our living room. So excited!
The New Flooring Idea Book by Regina Cole: We have been wondering what flooring to put in our entry/dining/kitchen/laundry/familyroom area....pergo, tile, wood. This book goes through the different types of flooring options and explains the benefits and down falls of each type. We decided on Engineered Wood flooring...never knew what it was, so the book was great for enlightening us.
I'm off to look at a few of my other books....keep reading!

Book Review #2:
I wasn't so great at getting through my bag of books this week since I was gone, but here are a few reviews of the books I was able to get through. I added a few more to my book bag list as well.
Great American Houses and their Architectural Styles by Virginia and Lee McAlester: Fantastic book. I want to get it for my own. They went through many architectural styles, showed what details make them unique and took you on a tour of a famous house in that style. Loved the federal style and the Queen Anne Victorian.
Country Fabric Style by Julia Bird: They used beautiful fabrics in this book. The book shows you how to make pillows, curtains, and other decorative items. Loved seeing the fabrics, but didn't find anything I wanted to make.
Simple Fountains by Dorcas (poor girl!) Adkins: We are trying to figure out what kind of pond or fountain we want to add to our yard. This book contained mostly small fountains, and indoor fountains, so it wasn't any good for what we were looking for.
Scrapbooking Baby's Cherished Moments by Rebecca Carter: Beautiful pages and fun ideas for scrapbooking baby's photos...used a couple ideas from it already.
The Best of Signature Kitchens: Beautiful pictures. A great reference book for anyone wanting to remodel or build a new kitchen...too bad I am not doing either. :(
The New Smart Approach to Kid's Rooms by Megan Connelly: Great pictures of kid's rooms in this book...they have just about everything in the book too....lots of ideas!
That's all for book review this week. Happy Reading!!!

Book Review
Here is my little book review of the books that were in my book bag last week. I am adding new books to my sidebar (since today was library day).
The Joy of Imperfection: I haven't finished this book yet, but I am loving it so far. I will give a full review when I finish it.
The 5 People You Meet In Heaven: Loved this book. It was our book club book for the month. We watched the movie on book club night. The movie was excellent, and actually followed the book almost perfectly....which I have found is not usually the case when a book is made into a movie. The story is about a man who dies and goes to heaven and meets 5 people who have in someway affected his life, and each one has a lesson to teach him that he didn't learn on earth. This story is very thought provoking and makes you think about how your actions affect those around you. A must read!
Style On A Budget, and Clutter Cutters: Both excellent books. I love Better Homes and Gardens books. Their style is clean and practicle. My favorite Better Homes and Gardens decorating book is Small House Big Style...love the houses on pages 38-49 and 80-91.
Scrapbooking Your Wedding by Memory Makers: Some cute ideas. I am going to scrapbook my wedding pictures (finally, after almost 9 years of marriage), and I will use some fun ideas from this book.
Building Garden Furniture by Ray Martin & Lee Rankin: Some nice furniture. There are some cute adirondak (sp?) chairs that I might have my husband make.
The Complete Book of Garden Projects: Very nice gardens. Wish I had looked at this book before we designed our yard.
The Beauty Workbook by Cynthia Robins: A very informative book if you are teenager. I did learn some things about foundation, but not much else.
A Place for Everything by Peri Wolfam & Charles Gold: Didn't like this book at all. Very cluttered country style...which was odd since it was an organizational book. Thought it funny that they thought it was a good idea to put a large basket of toilet paper in your bathroom as a decorative statement (we are talking about a dozen rolls in a basket). Weird.
Anyway, that is my book review for the week. I hope you found it useful. I am taking off for vacation tomorrow, so I won't be around for a few days. Have a great weekend fellow bloggers.

Books in my book bag
In honor of my trip to the library yesterday, and since I am always looking for a good book (and I thought others might be too!), I am adding a new list to my sidebar. I am adding the books in my book bag. I was trying to add pictures, but haven't figured that out yet. I was actually overly impressed with myself that I got the names of the books on the sidebar, since I had NO idea what I was doing. I will try to update it every week after I go to the library.
